Lopes shoot out to 27-point halftime lead, only make 5 turnovers
Grand Canyon raced out to match the second-largest halftime lead of its Division I era and did not look back to rout Coastal Carolina ??-?? on Saturday night at Global Credit Union Arena..
The Lopes (6-4) matched their record through 10 games of last season by dominating the Chanticleers (6-5) in nearly every category and leading by as much as 31 points early in the second half. It was GCU's final game before starting its first Mountain West season with a conference game at Wyoming (8-2) next Saturday.
GCU junior Makaih Williams had an 11-point, five-rebound, three-assist first half to help the Lopes take a 52-25 halftime lead.
Williams finished with 16 points in just 21 just minutes off the bench, hitting 6 of 14 shots from the field and 3 of 8 from the 3-point line. He has dished out 10 assists with only one turnover in the past two games, when he returned to a sixth man role with junior Caleb Shaw starting.
GCU kept one possession alive for six shots before scoring and followed that up with defensive gems from graduate power forward Wilhelm Breidenbach (blocked shot) and senior guard Jaden Henley (steal). When the run ended, the Lopes led 29-12 with just less than nine minutes to go.
