ST. LOUIS – Grand Canyon saw a two-point, second-half deficit turn into a blowout loss Saturday night when Saint Louis used runs of 11-0 and 13-0 to bruise and cruise to a 78-64 lead at Chaifetz Arena.
With the Billikens' season-best crowd of 6,105 fans, Saint Louis improved to 4-0 without national player of the year candidate Robbie Avila starring. Saint Louis sophomore guard Amari McCottry scored a game-high 20 points and Billikens 6-foot-3 senior guard Dion Brown grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
Key player
GCU sophomore guard
Makaih Williams shared the game's scoring high with McCottry by scoring 20 points. He thrived on free throws, sinking 11 of 12 to offset 4-for-19 shooting from the field.
Williams had second-half moments that gave the Lopes a chance to get into the game, starting a 7-0 run to open the second half. Williams also made a fastbreak 3-pointer that was followed by a
Nana Owusu-Anane drive that put GCU within nine points with 14:07 remaining.
Key moment
GCU missed 14 consecutive shots from the field in the second half, leading to Saint Louis' largest lead of the game at 73-46 with 6:30 to play in the game.
The Lopes (2-2) did not just miss shots during that stretch. Billikens reserve Kellen Thames made consecutive steals and another reserve, power forward Paul Otienno, contributed to his three-block game.
Key statistic
Saint Louis outscored GCU 30-13 in fastbreak points with 21 of those coming in the second half.
Quotable
GCU head coach
Bryce Drew: "I can say there wasn't one thing that happened out there that we hadn't prepared and practiced the last three days for. I think they're physicality, their aggressiveness, really hurt us."
