Two more GCU programs join 17 others in Mountain West Conference
Two additional Grand Canyon athletic programs will call the Mountain West home beginning in the 2026-27 academic year, as the conference announced the addition of men's soccer and men's swimming and diving on Wednesday.
"The addition of men's soccer and men's swimming and diving to the Mountain West represents a bold step forward in our commitment to broad-based excellence," MW Commissioner Gloria Nevarez said. "These sports not only elevate our competitive profile but also reflect the growing interest and investment from our member institutions. We're proud to support student-athletes in these disciplines and excited to see the impact they'll have on our conference's future."
For 2026-27, the conference adds its 20th and 21st sponsored sports and alters baseball's look with membership lineups that feature:
Men's swimming and diving returns as a Mountain West sport for the first time since 2011. GCU's men's program will join its women's program as MW members after the Lopes men compete in The Big West for the 2025-26 academic year.
The conference is adding Utah Tech as an affiliate member in men's soccer and baseball, sports that the Trailblazers' new home in 2026, the Big Sky Conference, does not sponsor. Utah Tech is also vying for a WAC men's soccer regular-season championship entering the final week of play.
After the conference's addition of men's soccer and men's swimming and diving is complete, 19 of GCU's 20 athletic programs will be Mountain West members, while beach volleyball continues play in the competitive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
