By: Braden Dohrmann
Grand Canyon faces Wyoming at home Thursday night before hitting the road to take on Fresno State on Sunday amid a heated Mountain West standings race.
AT A GLANCE
GCU sophomore forward Reese Clem scored the game-winning goal at UNLV via penalty kick in the 81st minute Sunday. She is tied for the team-lead in goals and earned GCU's first "brace" in the last two seasons, 9/28 vs Air Force.
Lopes senior midfielder AJ Loera scored her first goal of the season in the UNLV match. She is two assists away from the program's all-time record (18) set by Marleen Schimmer and Leah Pirro.
GCU freshman defender Elle Stanley scored her first collegiate goal in the late minutes of GCU's loss at New Mexico. She was assisted by her club, turned college, teammate
and freshman Caprice Chiuchiolo.
Lopes junior goalkeeper Emma Knack is third in the nation in saves with 94, and seventh in the country in saves per match (6.7). She holds the top three Mountain West single-match save totals this season (16 and 11 twice).
Knack is second in the MW in shutouts (six).
The Lopes split each of their first three weeks of Mountain West play, with alternating wins and losses over their last 11 matches, dating back to Aug. 31.
Cissell earned his 65th all-time win at GCU with the win at Northern Arizona, passing Stevie Gill (2008-15) as the winningest coach in program history. He is the coaching wins all-time leader in four programs. (GCU, Kansas City and William Jewell men/women).
LAST TIME OUT
Grand Canyon split its third weekend in Mountain West play, losing 4-1 at New Mexico and winning 2-1 at UNLV. This capped a four-match road stretch for the Lopes.
After multiple lightning delays, GCU got behind early to New Mexico, which outshot the Lopes substantially.
Grand Canyon trailed 1-0 at halftime to UNLV before scoring twice in the second half. Clem scored the game-winning penalty kick, thanks to sophomore forward Ellie Johannes drawing a foul in the box.
