Lopez leads Lopes with 2 RBIs, tallies 87 in 2 GCU years
TEMPE, Ariz. — Grand Canyon fell 8-2 to Arizona State in a Tuesday matchup at Farrington Stadium.
Graduate designated player Ramsay Lopez batted in both of GCU's runs, including her fifth home run of the season. Lopes junior Meghan Golden threw 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief, but GCU (16-9) could not rally against ASU (20-6).
After falling behind 8-0 when the Sun Devils opened with a pair of four-run innings, the Lopes scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning when Lopez smashed a home run off the left-field scoreboard.
Lopez notched her second RBI in the fifth inning, bringing in graduate first baseman Ashley Trierweiler on a sacrifice fly. Trierweiler, who went 2 for 4, reached on a single to center field, and advanced to third on a single through the right side by graduate right fielder Kristin Fifield.
GCU stranded seven runners on base with junior center fielder Makaiya Gomez going 2 for 3, and freshman second baseman Savannah Groshong-Kirk reaching base on a hit and a walk.
Entering Tuesday night's game, the Lopes were 1-1 against the Sun Devils, most recently defeating them 3-2 in Tempe last April.
In addition to Golden dropping her season ERA to a team-low 1.49, junior Emily Darwin struck out the side in the seventh inning to put her ERA at 1.57.
The Lopes travel this weekend to Seattle U, where they will open WAC competition with a Friday doubleheader and a Saturday finale.
