EDINBURG, Texas – Five days after setting a new Division I-era program record for wins in a season, Grand Canyon continued its trend of season accolades Thursday night with a 66-40 win at UT Rio Grande Valley.
The 11th victory away from Phoenix tied this GCU team with the 2011-12 squad for most road wins in a season. GCU (24-5, 16-2 WAC) stayed atop the WAC standings by a half-game over California Baptist (23-3, 15-2 WAC), which defeated Stephen F. Austin 100-96 in overtime Thursday night.
For the third time in the last five contests, the Lopes held their opponent to 45 points or fewer. Entering the night ranked 13th nationally in scoring defense, GCU pocketed 13 steals and forced 21 turnovers while holding UTRGV to 19 points in the first half.
GCU's offense started in rhythm and ended in rhythm with 21 first-quarter points and 18 fourth-quarter points. The Erikstrup twins accounted for over half of the scoring production. Graduate forward
Laura Erikstrup had a game-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while graudate guard
Sydney Erikstrup had 13 points, four rebounds and a team-high four steals.
Ten Lopes scored with 22 team assists, which tied for the second most by GCU this season. Fifth-year point guard
Jada Holland tied a season-high nine assists, including seven in the first half. Junior guard
Trinity San Antonio dished out six to add to her eight points and two steals.
The first quarter saw plenty of scoring as GCU shot 60% from the floor to lead 21-15. Where both offenses clicked, the second quarter was all defensive as the Lopes held UTRGV to four points.
GCU never let go of its double-digit lead the rest of the contest, going on a 6-0 run midway through the third quarter and a 5-0 run at the end of the third to lead by as many as 22. The fourth quarter saw seven Lopes score to cap the victory.
With seven free throws, GCU tied its lowest amount in a game since the season opener versus Saint Mary's.
The Lopes onclude their regular-season road schedule Saturday at Stephen F. Austin (18-10, 12-5 WAC). Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. (Phoenix time).
