Texas State senior pitcher Jessica Mullins struck out 13 Grand Canyon hitters to shut out the Lopes 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at GCU Softball Stadium.
GCU graduates
Ashley Trierweiler (first baseman) and
Kristin Fifield (right fielder) and senior shortstop
Katelyn Dunckel were the only three Lopes to reach base. Trierweiler singled to third base and Dunckel followed with a fielder's choice in the the fourth before Fifield doubled in the seventh.Â
Preseason Co-Pitcher of the Year
Meghan Golden (junior) started solid for GCU, sending the Bobcats down in order for three innings with the help of four strikeouts. But the Bobcats racked up four runs in the fourth and two insurance runs in the fifth to take a commanding 6-0 lead.Â
A Texas State single in the fourth, followed by a double and a Lopes fielding error allowed two Bobcat runs across the plate and caused a pitching change. With graduate pitcher
Megan Schumacher in the circle and two runners in scoring position, Texas State sent a sacrifice fly to left field for a third run, while another Bobcat advanced to third on a wild pitch and eventually stole home.Â
In the top of the fifth, Texas State singled through the right side before hitting a two-run home run to left field.Â
With two innings remaining in regulation, junior pitcher
Emily Darwin (1 2/3 innings) and freshman pitcher
Alina Satcher (1/3 inning) made appearances in the circle to combine for three strikeouts and one hit.Â
