Grand Canyon dropped the second game of a four-game set to Nebraska 11-1 on Friday night at GCU Ballpark.
Another large crowd of 2,541 fans took in the game. For the first time in program history, GCU has hosted a crowd in excess of 2,000 fans in each of its first four home games.
The Huskers (3-2) brought the bats to the ballpark, tallying a season-high 17 hits. They scattered their runs across the duration of the game by scoring in the first, third, fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
GCU's lone run came in the seventh inning. Junior designated hitter
Beau Ankeney drew a full-count walk to open the frame and advanced around the basepaths on a single by redshirt junior catcher
Alton Gyselman, a fielder's choice and an RBI ground out by senior right fielder
Eddy Pelc.
The Lopes (4-2) ended the night with four hits. The top two hitters in their order, seniors
Dustin Crenshaw and
Cade Verdusco, each recorded a hit. The other two hits came from the No. 7 spot with one from Gyselman and another from a pinch-hitting
Michael Diaz. The junior outfielder picked up his first hit in a GCU uniform.
After leading GCU to a nationally televised win last Saturday, senior right-hander
Carter Young was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs in four innings of work while striking out six.
GCU used three relief pitchers, highlighted by sophomore
Brock Toney tossing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball with three strikeouts.
Sophomore catcher Josh Caron homered twice and racked up five RBIs to highlight the offense for Nebraska. Of the Huskers' 17 base hits, 13 were singles.
After a 4-0 start to the season, the Lopes will look to put an end to a brief two-game losing streak when the teams square off for Game 3 at 6 p.m. Saturday at GCU Ballpark.
