GCU statement on West Coast Conference legal action

We appreciated the invitation to join the West Coast Conference and were disappointed to learn yesterday, through a WCC social media post, that a lawsuit has been filed against us containing incomplete and incorrect allegations. We understand the disappointment in our decision to ultimately decline the WCC's invitation and we empathize with their circumstances after also losing prominent members such as BYU and Gonzaga recently. GCU was not scheduled to become a member of the WCC until July 1, 2025, and the WCC's claims that GCU has "withdrawn" from the WCC or breached any contractual obligation are inaccurate. We look forward to presenting our case in court.Â

In addition, the WCC's statement yesterday also inexplicably portrayed GCU as an "affiliate" of Grand Canyon Education. By any definition, characterizing GCU as an affiliate is grossly inaccurate. Grand Canyon Education is an independent education services provider that provides services to GCU and 21 other university partners. Thousands of universities have similar agreements with education service providers. The mention of GCU's agreement with a successful education services provider is both odd and irrelevant to any conference affiliation for the university.
