Grand Canyon senior forward
JaKobe Coles made as good of an impression on the WAC as Lopes Nation in his GCU debut, being named a Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week and winning WAC Player of the Week after posting double-doubles in each GCU win.

Coles, who transferred from TCU, recorded the first two double-doubles of his career and set career scoring and rebounding highs to help the shorthanded Lopes to victories against Cal State Fullerton and Western Kentucky. Coles is one of five players to win the Oscar Roberts National Player of the Week award, and the WAC also selected him as WAC Newcomer of the Week.
In the season opener, Coles set career highs for points (26) and rebounds (13) on Monday when GCU defeated Cal State Fullerton 89-79 at Global Credit Union Arena. The Denton, Texas, native logged a career-high 36 minutes with the Lopes missing two other frontcourt starters, junior
Duke Brennan and graduate
Tyon Grant-Foster. He had a double-double in the second half alone, tallying 11 points and 10 rebounds after halftime.
Coles followed it up with another double-double Saturday night, when GCU rallied to beat Western Kentucky 74-72 at home to move to 2-0. Coles again played 36 minutes, making 7 of 15 shots and finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The 6-foot-8 forward's first week of games with GCU ended in averages of 21.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks in 36.0 minutes per game. Coles shot 57% from the field and made 7 of 10 free throws.
"The coaching staff and everybody who has brought me into this organization has been beautiful," Coles said. "It's a testimony to them, and I have a lot of confidence in them. I have a lot of confidence in myself. The shots went in. I played hard. My teammates played hard, and we came out with a win."
