GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team wrapped up a two-match road trip with a 2-0 win at North Dakota on Sunday.
The Lopes (5-2-1) bounced back from their first shutout loss on Thursday, flexing their depth and recording a season-high 30 shots on Sunday against the Fighting Hawks (3-3-2). Sophomore defender
Payton Fisher came off the GCU bench and scored in the 43rd minute before senior captain
Gianna Gourley sealed the win with a goal in the 82nd minute.
GCU controlled possession for most of the game and parlayed the time on the ball into multiple scoring chances. Sophomore midfielder
Leah Pirro and forwards
Lindsey Prokop and
Hannah Smith all recorded shots on goal in the first half but were unable to beat North Dakota goalkeeper Madi Livingston, who tied a season-high with eight saves.
Substitutions came in for the Lopes near the end of the half and kept the pressure on the Fighting Hawks defense. In the 43rd minute, midfielder
Grace Bartlett tossed the ball in from the right sideline near the penalty box, where Fisher, who had subbed into the match three minutes earlier, found the ball and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to put GCU up 1-0. It was Fisher's first goal of the season and second of her career.
While the offense swung momentum, the GCU defense was strong throughout the match en route to a fifth shutout win for GCU junior goalkeeper
DeAira Jackson. The Lopes kept North Dakota off balance on the offensive end and disrupted multiple passes in the final third of the field, denying any shots on goal.
It is the first time this season that the Lopes have not allowed a shot on goal in a match and just the third time in the
Chris Cissell era.
The Lopes turned up the intensity on offense in the second half, recording 23 shots with seven on goal in the final 45 minutes. They were finally able to break through with an unassisted goal by Gourley in the 82nd minute to seal the win. It was the first goal for GCU's leading scorer in two games and Gourley now sits at 98 career points.
It was the Lopes' second game without head coach
Chris Cissell, who was with family in Missouri following his mother's passing.
GCU will be back in action Thursday at home when they face Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. in GCU Stadium.
