Members play round-robin, 20-game schedules on mostly Thursdays, Saturdays
The inconsistency in WAC basketball schedules was removed for the upcoming men's and women's seasons with a return to balanced schedules on set days of the week.
The WAC, now at 11 members, released the 2022-23 conference basketball schedules with nearly every week sticking to a Thursday-Saturday schedule, except for an earlier conference-opening night falling on a November Wednesday for all teams.
Each WAC member will play a home-and-away set against each conference foe, giving teams a 20-game WAC schedule. To accommodate the WAC's largest conference slate in its 61-year history, the WAC-opening week was pushed up to Wednesday, Nov. 29, and Saturday, Dec. 2.
The WAC will match last year's largest conference schedules, the 20-game slates played by seven conferences – ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big West, Horizon, Metro Atlantic and Pac-12.
The GCU conference slate will start with head coach Bryce Drew's men playing at UT Rio Grande Valley on Nov. 29, when head coach Molly Miller's women will play UTRGV at GCU Arena. The entire men's and women's schedules share opponents on the same days at opposite locations.
Conference play will resume Jan. 4 and remain on Thursdays and Saturdays, except for Thursday, Feb. 8, not having games.
Last season, there were nearly as many men's basketball conference games played on Wednesday (29) as there were on Thursday (34), creating an imbalance of rest and travel. On the women's side, 13 conference games were played on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Neither GCU men's or women's team will play more than three WAC games consecutively at home or on the road.
The conference road trip pairings for the men are Southern Utah/Utah Tech, Stephen F. Austin/UT Arlington and Tarleton/Abilene Christian. Games at UTRGV, Utah Valley and Seattle U will come in weeks paired with home games while the March 8 finale at California Baptist will be the week's only game.
For the women, two-game trips will include Abilene Christian/Tarleton, Utah Tech/California Baptist and UTRGV/Stephen F. Austin. Games at UT Arlington, Utah Valley and Seattle U will be paired in weeks with a home game while its Feb. 10 visit to Southern Utah will be their week's only WAC game.
The GCU men and women each finished fourth in the WAC regular season with the Lopes men taking the WAC Tournament championship for a NCAA tournament berth and the women reaching the WAC Tournament semifinals.
GCU and Utah Valley hold the second-longest active WAC tenure. They entered the conference together in 2013, a year after Seattle U joined the WAC.
