Grand Canyon added junior college All-American outfielder Makaiya Gomez to next season's roster.
"I feel very fortunate to get MK," Lopes head coach
Shanon Hays said of Gomez. "She is a heavily recruited, five-tool player, who has put up some awesome numbers."
Gomez competed for South Mountain Community College last season, earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association and National Junior College Athletic Association first-team All-American honors.Â

The Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of Year appeared in 64 games for the Cougars and batted .533 with 123 runs, 113 hits, 88 RBIs, 28 stolen bases, 25 doubles and 20 home runs, notching a .631 on-base percentage and a .953 slugging percentage. Gomez set a new South Mountain single-season record for runs and walks (54), finished second in program history for hits, third all-time in RBIs and tied for fifth in doubles and home runs.
The 5-foot-7 native of West Jordan, Utah, also started last season with a 25-game hitting streak and ended the regular season with a 15-game hitting streak while recording 23 multi-RBI games.Â
Before transferring to South Mountain, Gomez committed to Utah, where she redshirted her first year, but appeared in 29 games of the 2022 season. While Gomez saw some action in the outfield, she was primarily entered as a pinch runner for her speed. She batted .333, with eight runs, five stolen bases and one double.Â
Prior to her collegiate career, Gomez played three varsity seasons at Copper Hills High School, where she was the 2019-20 Gatorade Utah Softball Player of the Year and earned three all-state selections, academic all-state honors and team MVP.Â
"I'm very excited to continue my athletic and academic career at GCU," Gomez said. "I can't wait to make new memories and experience GCU to the fullest. Go Lopes!"
