Grand Canyon freshman first baseman
Zach Yorke was named the WAC Hitter of the Week on Monday following a 10-RBI week to help the Lopes go 4-0.
Yorke is only the second freshman to earn a WAC hitter or pitcher weekly honor this season and is GCU's first freshman to win WAC Hitter of the Week since the opening weekend of 2021.
A native of Campbell, Calif., Yorke went 7 for 14 (.500) on the week with 10 RBIs, five walks and four runs scored. He had an .857 slugging percentage and .619 on-base percentage for the week.
Yorke hit a ninth-inning grand slam in the series opener at Tarleton, pushing his season RBI total past Ben Menke's 53 in 1996 for the most by a GCU freshman in a Division I season. Entering Tuesday's matchup at Baylor, Yorke needs four RBIs to break Tim Salmon's 1987 record (61) for most RBIs by a Lopes freshman.
Yorke opened the week by walking twice in GCU's extra-inning win over Arizona on Tuesday. In the weekend opener at Tarleton, he went 3 for 5 with six RBIs including the grand slam. In Games 2 and 3 at Tarleton, he went 2 for 3 with a double, combining to drive in four more runs between the two games.
Yorke joins two-time winner
Jacob Wilson and one-time winner
Homer Bush Jr. as GCU's WAC Hitter of the Week honorees this season. Pitchers
Zach Thornton (twice) and
Daniel Avitia have also earned WAC weekly accolades.
