Bryce Drew brought a family feel to the Grand Canyon program, and now he has brought his family to the program.
Caleb Shaw, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound shooting guard, is making the Lopes more of a family affair by transferring to GCU, where his uncle (Drew) will be his head coach, his father (
Casey Shaw) will be one of his assistant coaches and his older brother (
Isaiah Shaw) will be a teammate.
Shaw, a graduate of Chandler (Arizona) Valley Christian High School graduate, averaged 17.1 minutes last season for Northern Colorado with 5.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game.
"Really excited to add Caleb to our team," Drew said. "He is a big guard that can make shots and play above the rim. This summer, he should take a big step as he continues to grow and develop."
Shaw was one of 150 freshman guards in the nation to log at least 550 minutes last season, when his top performances included a November three-game stretch in which he shot 60% from the field and averaged 15.7 points per game.
"The biggest thing is obviously the family thing," Caleb said. "Being away, you start to realize what's really important. A big part of it was I've never been part some sort of basketball team that hasn't involved my family in some way. It felt like something was missing while I was up at Greeley.
"Going away definitely gave me a better perspective for how special of a place GCU is."
Caleb was part of a Class 3A state champion at Valley Christian in 2022, when he also was the 3A Player of the Year for averaging 26.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
His family basketball roots runs deep with Casey having a 13-year pro career in the NBA, Italy and Spain, while his mother, Dana, was a two-time Mid-Continent Conference Player of the Year for Toledo. She is the Director of Government Relations for GCU. Dana's and Bryce's father, Homer, is a College Basketball Hall of Famer and his grandsons' biggest advocate in Phoenix.

"All of it is a pull, but I think the biggest would be to get a chance to play with my brother," Caleb said. "I got to do that in high school, both with my little brother and my older brother. There's nothing like that.
"We always talked about it when we were in Nashville and getting ready to come to GCU. We talked about how we could maybe one day play together at GCU."
Isaiah is 18 months older than Caleb, but Caleb will be a sophomore while Isaiah will be a redshirt freshman after sitting out 2021-22 and suffering an early-season knee injury to redshirt 2022-23.
With an offseason goal to add size and muscle, Caleb is also looking forward to when he plays in front of the GCU Arena crowd with which he watched games for his final two high school years in the Valley.
"It's going to be crazy being in front of the craziest fans in all of college basketball," Caleb said. "That's super exciting. I guess you don't really know what it's like until you actually experience it."
