OREM, Utah — Grand Canyon softball continued conference competition, losing 3-1 in the first game before bouncing back for a 6-1 win with its fourth split in four opening WAC pairs.
GCU bounces back to secure split
The Lopes built a five-run lead in the first two innings with a two-run home run from senior designated player Ramsay Lopez, tying fellow senior Kirstin Fifield for the team lead with 12 homers on the season. Junior shortstop Katelyn Dunckel also homered for her seventh of the season and GCU scored off aggressive base running by freshman pinch runner Leinani Lutu, who stole home.
Dunckel recorded the Lopes' final run with a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing senior catcher Kinsey Koeltzow to score.
Sophomore pitcher Meghan Golden, the winning pitcher, and freshman pitcher Taryn Batterton allowed five hits combined, limiting the Wolverines to one run in the bottom of the third. GCU recorded 10 hits, sharing the wealth among seven hitters.
Lopes lose lowest-scoring game of season
GCU started its WAC series at UVU with a 3-1 loss, beginning its third of four conference series' from behind.
All the action happened early in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader, as the Lopes traded three defensive errors for three unanswered Wolverine runs by the bottom of the second inning. GCU scored its only run in the form of a Kayla Rodgers home run, the junior left fielder's first of the season, in the top of the third.
Utah Valley forced four up-and-down GCU innings. The Lopes offense tallied four hits to Utah Valley's nine, while GCU senior pitcher Ariel Thompson and sophomore pitcher Emily Darwin combined for three strikeouts while allowing only one walk.
GCU returns to Wolverine Softball Complex on Saturday to decide the series at 1 p.m. (Phoenix time).
