Grand Canyon softball came out on top twice Friday night, grinding out a 6-3 victory over Michigan State before rallying to beat Boise State 5-4 and improve to 18-1 on the season.
Lopes manage 6-3 victory over Michigan State
The Lopes tallied six runs on eight hits against Michigan State with senior right fielder
Kristin Fifield doubling and homering in a four-RBI game.
GCU struck first with the double from the El Paso, Texas, native. Fifield scored freshman center fielder
Brynn-Jordan Smythe, who had singled up the middle and stolen second base.
The Lopes continued to lay their sturdy foundation throughout the duration of Friday's first game, with a RBI single by junior shortstop
Katelyn Dunckel RBI before Fifield crushed a three-run home run to right center field, scoring Dunckel and Smythe for a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
GCU scored its final run in the fourth when freshman pinch runner Emma Rodriguez advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher
Kinsey Koeltzow and came home on a Michigan State error.
Another shutout seemed imminent, as the Lopes maintained their 6-0 position through six innings. But the Spartans found new life in the top of the seventh, tacking on three runs before the conclusion of the game.
Koeltzow walk-off single beats Boise State
GCU won its ninth straight game by rallying from a 4-2 hole to beat Boise State in Friday night's second game at GCU Softball Stadium.
After a quick, scoreless, first inning, Boise State got an early 3-0 jump on GCU, with two doubles in the top of the second. But the Lopes didn't stay silent. Junior first baseman Katelyn Brannstrom answered with a double down the right-field line to score Fifield and put the Lopes on the board in the bottom half of the inning.
An efficient GCU defensive performance allowed the Lopes to return to the batter's box and add an additional run to the board, with a RBI single rom Fifield.
The score remained stagnant through the fourth, but Boise State increased its lead to 4-2 in the fifth with a solo home run. Although momentum slightly shifted in the moment, sophomore pitcher
Meghan Golden closed the inning with a swinging strikeout before the Broncos could build anything more.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Lopes tied the score at 4-4 after a Fifield RBI single and an RBI ground out by senior designated player
Ramsay Lopez.
After the Broncos left two runners on base in the top of the seventh, GCU had one last opportunity to finish the game in regulation. Fifield led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single from senior third baseman
Madison Schaefer. With two outs, Koeltzow singled up the middle to bring home Fifield as the winning run. Fifield has 36 RBIs in in 19 games this season to double her RBI pace from last season.
GCU returns to action against New Mexico at 4 p.m. (Phoenix time) and Charlotte at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
