Grand Canyon softball improved to 24-3 after sweeping Saturday's GCU Invitational games with an 8-3 win against Colorado State and a 6-2 win against Abilene Christian at GCU Softball Stadium.
Lopes find redemption with 8-3 win over Colorado StateÂ
GCU dropped seven hits for eight runs to defeat Colorado State after falling 4-3 to the Rams in Friday's matchup. Junior first baseman
Kaitlyn Brannstrom led the offensive charge with three RBI. Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Ariel Thompson and sophomore pitcher
Meghan Golden combined for six strikeouts with only one walk.
Â
Leaving three Lopes on base through the second, GCU put its first runs on the board with RBIs from Brannstrom and Rodgers in the bottom of the third. But the Lopes lead was short-lived, as CSU answered with two runs of its own in the top of the fourth.
Â
Scoring an additional run, on another Brannstrom RBI, GCU took control once again and never looked back, hitting their stride in the bottom of the sixth with five runs.Â
Â
With two on and no outs, Lopes senior second baseman
Macee Barnes singled, advanced to second on a throw and made her way to third after an error by the Rams right fielder, sending Koeltzow and senior center fielder
Hannah Burnett across the plate.Â
Â
Immediately after that, GCU senior right fielder
Kristin Fifield hit a single through the right side to bring Barnes home.Â
Â
Up 6-2, Brannstrom batted in Fifield, and Burnett rounded out the inning by reaching base on the Colorado State pitcher's error to send junior pinch runnerÂ
Lovey Kepa'a home for GCU's final run of the game.Â
The Rams added one last run because of two GCU errors in the seventh inning.
GCU goes 2-0 against Abilene ChristianÂ
It was a family affair Saturday afternoon at GCU Softball Stadium, as 18 Lopes played a hand in their 6-2 victory over Abilene Christian.Â
Â
Although ACU struck first, GCU quickly evened the score to 1-1 with a solo home run by junior shortstop
Katelyn Dunckel.Â
Â
Holding the Wildcats to one hit in the top of the second, the Lopes went to town, scoring four runs with two outs in the bottom half of the inning.Â
Â
Burnett singled down the left-field line and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Koeltzow tripled down the right-field line to bring Burnett home. Next, Barnes singled, advanced to second on a Rams error and made her way to third on a throw, allowing Koeltzow to score for the Lopes. In the tail end of the inning, Fifield knocked a two-run homer out of the park for GCU's fourth and fifth runs of the game.Â
Â
After allowing Abilene Christian an additional run in the top of the third, the Lopes answered in the fourth when Barnes walked and advanced to third when Fifield boarded the bases on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch.Â
Â
In their next three offensive half-innings, the Wildcats only managed two hits before the Lopes claimed a 6-2 victory with Lopes junior
Hailey Hudson and freshman
Taryn Batterton each allowing one hit in two shutout innings.
