Grand Canyon junior shortstop
Jacob Wilson was named the WAC Hitter of the Week on Monday after collecting seven hits and nine RBIs over the weekend.
In a four-game weekend against Gonzaga and Ohio State, Wilson went 7 for 14 (.500) with three doubles, a home run and nine RBIs.
"He's the man," Lopes head coach
Gregg Wallis said. "It's the little things for me. Obviously, I don't want to take away from what he does with the bat because it's special but just the confidence."
In Friday night's matchup with Gonzaga, Wilson hit the game-tying sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Later that same inning, he put an exclamation point on the evening with a no-doubt, three-run home run to left-center field as a part of the Lopes' 11-run inning.
One day later, Wilson helped lead the Lopes to a comeback shootout win over the Bulldogs. He tallied four hits, including a bases-clearing double in the third, an RBI double in the fourth and a game-tying RBI single in the eighth.
"He's never been afraid of the stage," said GCU assistant coach
Jack Wilson, his father. "He can always step up in a crucial situation and really give a solid at bat. He can control his heartbeat."
Wilson earned his second career WAC Hitter of the Week award after winning it on March 21, 2022.
The Lopes have earned one of the conference's weekly honors in the first two weeks of the season after junior lefty
Zach Thornton was named WAC Pitcher of the Week last week.
