Grand Canyon shortstop
Jacob Wilson is back in familiar position on the Preseason Golden Spikes Watch List, an end-of-year award presented to the top player in college baseball.
Wilson ended his sophomore season in 2022 as one of 31 semifinalists for the award. This year, he begins on the 55-man preseason watch list among college baseball's top stars.
The lengthy list of preseason accolades for the Lopes shortstop continues, highlighted by recognition as a Preseason All-American by five major publications and being voted the WAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year.
Since being named a semifinalist for the award last spring, Wilson has only added to his credentials with an impressive summer that further vaulted him into the national spotlight. After a short stay in the Cape Cod League, Wilson joined USA Baseball's training camp for the Collegiate National Team. He was the top offensive performer during team intrasquads and made the official roster for international competition, where he also excelled. He was named D1Baseball.com's Top Summer Breakout Prospect.
The preseason version of the Golden Spikes Award Watch List will hold until April 5, when an updated midseason list will be unveiled. Semifinalists will be announced on May 22, finalists released on June 7 and the winner being crowned on June 25.
Wilson is joined on the watch list by fellow WAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year, Carlos Contreras of Sam Houston. The duo represents the only WAC players on the list.
Including Contreras, GCU is scheduled to face eight players named to the watch list in its 2023 schedule. Tennessee, Michigan State, Texas State and Arizona are also represented.
GCU's season is set to get underway on Friday, Feb. 17 against UC San Diego at Salt River Fields. The Lopes will open the home schedule the following evening, hosting No. 2 Tennessee at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark on Saturday, Feb. 18.
