Grand Canyon reached its highest spot ever in NCAA Evaluation Tool rankings at No. 58 among 362 Division I programs in Monday's first NET release of the season and moved to No. 56 on Tuesday.
The Lopes (6-1) rank 46 spots ahead of the next closest WAC team, Stephen F. Austin (102), and are entering a week in which they will play two top-50 programs. San Diego State (No. 24) comes to GCU Arena on Tuesday night in an ESPU broadcast game before the Lopes head to Liberty (No. 43) for another ESPNU broadcast game Saturday in Lynchburg, Virginia.
GCU already has recorded one top-50 victory, defeating No. 49 San Francisco 76-72 on Nov. 17 at the Arizona Tip-Off in Glendale. The Lopes suffered their only loss of the season at that event two days later in a 75-68 defeat to undefeated South Carolina, which is ranked No. 29 in the NET rankings that are the NCAA tournament selection committee's primary sorting tool for selection and seeding.
The Lopes have another upcoming top-50 matchup against Louisiana Tech (No. 44), which visits GCU Arena on Dec. 30.
Among in-state teams, GCU trailed Arizona (No. 3) and ranked ahead of Arizona State (No. 99) and Northern Arizona (No. 223).
