STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 win at Tarleton State on Sunday.
The Lopes (11-4-4, 5-1-3 WAC) had a complete team performance with three goal scorers contributing to the win. GCU finishes the regular season with 18 conference points and clinches at least a top-four seed in next week's WAC Tournament hosted by California Baptist.
Known for her passing and playmaking all season long, it was sophomore midifelder
Leah Pirro who opened the scoring with her first goal of the season. Pirro received the long through ball from junior midfielder
Brenna Alderson and tucked a left-footed shot inside the right post to put GCU up 1-0 in the ninth minute.
Just two minutes later, Alderson scored a goal of her own by taking an errant pass from the goalkeeper for Tarleton State (4-12-3, 1-7-1 WAC) and immediately fired a 25-yard shot that went into the back of the net to put the Lopes up 2-0.
It was the first goal for Alderson since the second game of the season against Wright State in August. The Gilbert, Arizona, native was out for most of the season because of injury but has returned strong to lead the Lopes in scoring with three points on Sunday.
GCU controlled possession the rest of the half, outshooting the Texans 13-4 with eight shots on goal. Tarleton had scoring chances in the 32nd minute, but a diving save by GCU junior goalkeeper
DeAira Jackson kept them off the board.
Late in the first half, the Lopes kept up the pressure and made it a 3-0 lead in the 42nd minute. Fresh off the bench, senior midfielder
Jaycee Iranshad found sophomore forward
Hannah Smith streaking down the right side of the field. Smith quickly crossed into the box for sophomore defender
Payton Fisher, who scored with a right-footed shot for her second goal of the season.
Tarleton State broke the shutout in the 76th minute, but the GCU defense was strong the rest of the way holding the Texans to just two shots in the second half.
GCU put 21 players in action, and the Lopes will look to rely on the depth heading into postseason play next week in Riverside.
