Just as WAC basketball teams get a better feel for how a new seeding system works, they now know what those seeds will mean for the WAC Tournament in March.
The conference posted the new bracket structure, with the top four seeds receiving first-round byes in each of the 12-team tournaments over six days for men and women.
The WAC Resume Seeding System will determine this year's tournament seeding, instead of the usual means of seeding teams according to conference record. The system, the first of its kind in college basketball, uses an algorithm created by college basketball metrics expert Ken Pomeroy (of kenpom.com) and WAC associate commissioner Drew Speraw to factor nonconference and conference results and competition level.
With 13 members, conference records will determine the 12 qualifiers in each tournament before the WAC Resume Seeding System slots teams into seeds.
The women's tournament will start first on March 6 with the Nos. 5-12 seeds playing four games at Mandalay Bay's Michelob ULTRA Arena. The winners will have a day off before moving to Orleans Arena for the March 8 quarterfinal games with the top four seeds. After another day off, the March 10 semifinals and the March 11 championship will follow at Orleans Arena.
The men's tournament will start first on March 7 with the Nos. 5-12 seeds playing four games at Mandalay Bay's Michelob ULTRA Arena. The winners will have a day off before moving to Orleans Arena for the March 9 quarterfinal games with the top four seeds. With the March 10 semifinals and the March 11 championship also at Orleans Arena, the men's champion will have to win three games in three days.
The WAC Tournament women's championship game will be at 2 p.m. and the men's championship game will be at 7 p.m.
