RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team lost its opening WAC match 3-1 at California Baptist on Saturday night despite taking nearly twice as many shots.
The Lopes (4-3-1, 0-1 WAC) had plenty of scoring opportunities with a season-high 24 shots and 12 corner kicks, but a pair of late second-half goals from the Lancers (4-1-2, 1-0 WAC) put the game out of reach.
GCU came out aggressive from the very start, registering shots on goal in the third and fifth minutes, but it was CBU that scored first. In the 30th minute, the Lancers' Marcella Brooks rocketed a shot from 20 yards out into the top corner of the goal to put CBU up 1-0.
The Lopes remained aggressive and scored the equalizer in the 39th minute. Substitute forwards
Renee Sainz, a sophomore, and
Jaycee Iranshad, a junior, connected with passes in the box. Iranshad passed it out to redshirt freshman forward
Leah Pirro, who took a one-time, left-footed shot that found the top left corner. It was Pirro's second goal in three matches and the score was leveled at 1-1.
Just 35 seconds later, GCU had a golden opportunity to take the lead with a penalty kick, but the shot attempt by Pirro was saved on the line by CBU goalkeeper Noa Schumacher, who finished with seven saves.
Disappointed with a tie score at halftime, the Lopes kept momentum on their side in the second half by attempting 13 shots and taking nine corner kicks. More scoring opportunities presented themselves off those corner kicks with GCU sophomore defender
Sidney Roberts having her header blocked off the line by a CBU defender in the 55th minute and a shot by Pirro in the 70th minute that was saved.
On the flip side, CBU was able to capitalize on its scoring chances in the second half with five of its six shots going on frame. Two of those shots became goals late in the match at the 75th and 80th minutes to put the game out of reach.
Pirro finished with a season-high eight shots, four of which were on goal, while sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Ferguson collected a season-best six saves.
The Lopes will enjoy a bye week before hosting Seattle U and Utah Valley on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2 at GCU Stadium for an important homestand.
