San Francisco knocks off GCU in 4 sets at Bobcat Classic
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Grand Canyon left Shroyer Gymnasium at 2-1 after falling short to San Francisco in four sets on Saturday morning.
"San Francisco did a good job on the offensive end, and kept us off balance," Lopes head coach Tim Nollan said. "We had a tough morning and just never got it going after the late five-set match last night".
In a Bobcat Classic match filled with great moments, inconsistencies and a hitting percentage of only .192 cost the Lopes the win.
Both teams came out swinging in the first set, but San Francisco (3-0) emerged on top with a 25-23 finish as the Lopes handed them 15 points on errors alone and the Dons came up with 18 digs.
However, GCU rallied back in the second frame, taking a 5-0 lead and dominating the set with 17 kills and four aces to shut down San Francisco 25-17. Freshman outside hitter Tatum Parrott picked up five of her team-high 13 kills in the second set, when the Lopes hit .429.
The third set was anybody's game, with both teams fighting tooth and nail for any advantage. Neither squad ever seemed in complete control, as the lead changed hands four times, and the score tied on 15 occasions, including 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21, before the Dons capped the set at 25-22.
Sitting a set behind for the second time Saturday, the Lopes found themselves in a vat of quicksand, sinking 25-14 in the fourth set to San Francisco.
GCU freshman outside hitter McKenzie Wise set a career high with six service aces to go with 10 kills and eight digs.
"We have lots to work on before playing at GCU Arena on Friday," Nollan said of a 7 p.m. match against Idaho at GCU Arena.
