Grand Canyon infielder
Jacob Wilson was selected for the final roster for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and will represent the nation's top non-draft eligible players on the international stage.
Amid a pool of 23 position players in a five-game intrasquad training camp, Wilson led all batters in batting average (.467), runs (5), hits (7), home runs (2), RBIs (5), slugging percentage (1.000) and on-base percentage (.556).
"It's awesome," Wilson said in
an interview. "Coming out here, best players in the country. Everybody is super cool, getting to meet all these guys and just getting to know them a little bit. Coming out here and wearing this jersey on Fourth of July weekend, it's super special. This has been one of the coolest experiences of my life."
Of the 51 players who qualified for the North Carolina-based training camp, Wilson joins
the 26-man roster who will play at Honkbalweek Haarlem in the Netherlands.
"A week ago, as I sat with the 51 players that we invited to Cary, I told them what a tremendous honor this is because you are 51 of the best amateur baseball players in the United States of America," said Mike Bianco, Ole Miss' national-championship winning coach and the USA Baseball Collegiate Team Manager. "To narrow it down nearly in half is quite a task. We shared with all of them, as honestly and candidly as we could, that there are players that will go home that will play in the big leagues and be All-Americans next year. I commend these coaches and the USA Baseball committee on the selections we have made. We can't wait to get to work today and on the road to winning the championship at Honkbalweek."
Wilson ended the five-game set with back-to-back two-hit games. He homered in the second and fourth game of the series.
The five-game intrasquad series started at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., before moving to Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the middle three games and concluding at Truist Field in downtown Charlotte on July 4.
Team USA's action begins on Saturday with five straight days of pool play before a second-round game on July 14 and the championship game on July 15.
