The Grand Canyon women's soccer team will defend its WAC regular-season and tournament titles this fall with a schedule that was released Monday.
The 19-game slate includes a pair of NCAA tournament teams coming to GCU Stadium for nonconference matches before the Lopes face 11 WAC opponents in a round-robin format.
"I am very excited about the schedule that we have been able to put together for our soccer family," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell said. "It is an extremely competitive schedule with some very tough matchups on the road and at home that will certainly challenge our soccer family. I am thrilled for all of our fans, families, friends and Havocs, that we have so many exciting matchups at home for them to attend and see some great soccer."
GCU will face Ottawa at home on Aug. 6 in an exhibition match before traveling to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, where the Lopes will complete their preseason training against UC San Diego in a second exhibition match on Aug. 13.
The regular season will kick off at GCU Stadium with matches against Hawaii on Aug. 18 and against South Dakota State on Aug. 21. The Jackrabbits finished with 17 wins last season and appeared in the NCAA tournament for the sixth time in program history.
After traveling to UNLV and Utah State, GCU returns home for one of the biggest matches of the season against Pac-12 foe Arizona on Sept. 1. That night, the Lopes will unveil the 2021 WAC championship banner and hold a pregame championship ring ceremony, featuring current and former players.
Divisions are gone in conference play as the WAC moves back to a round-robin format this season. The first of GCU's 11 conference matches kicks off in Riverside against California Baptist on Sept. 17. The Lopes will return home for a pivotal weekend against Utah Valley and Seattle U on Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, respectively.
After a road match at UT Rio Grande Valley on Oct. 7, the Lopes will face a trio of first-time conference opponents in Stephen F. Austin on the road, and home matches against Abilene Christian and Tarleton. The Lumberjacks took home the WAC Southwest Division title last season while the Texans program will be in its first season.
A road trip to Utah Tech and Southern Utah precedes the final regular-season matches at home against New Mexico State and Sam Houston on Oct. 27 and 29, respectively. The WAC Tournament will head back to the Pacific Northwest from Nov. 2-6 with Seattle U hosting for the first time since 2019.
