A December tradition with Grand Canyon men's basketball will continue with the Lopes again participating in the Colangelo Classic at Footprint Center.
In a clash of premier mid-majors, GCU will face North Texas on Saturday, Dec. 10. Game times and television details will be announced at a later date.
"We are extremely thankful to Mr. Colangelo for helping bring such a great day of college basketball to Phoenix," Lopes head coach
Bryce Drew said. "It is a great honor to play in his event versus a great opponent in North Texas.
"We're excited to bring our program to Downtown Phoenix and the home of the Suns once again. It's a tremendous opportunity for our fans to watch us play a quality opponent in our own backyard and to showcase our unbelievable Havocs student section on a big stage."
The Lopes and Mean Green combined to go 48-15 last season and rank 92 and 55, respectively, in NET.
This year's Colangelo Classic has been split into two separate days. GCU's matchup with North Texas and San Diego State vs. Saint Mary's will take place on Dec. 10. There will be a triple-header on Dec. 21 with Saint Mary's playing Wyoming, USC taking on Colorado State, and UC Santa Barbara matching up with Appalachian State.
GCU returns to the home of the Phoenix Suns for the fifth time in six years and will compete in the fourth straight iteration of the Colangelo Classic.
"We look forward to returning to beautiful Footprint Center in Phoenix for this special collegiate event and to honoring Jerry Colangelo, a man who has done so much for basketball and the state he calls home," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "This two-day event will be a unique opportunity for fans to come out and take in five great games while enjoying the beautiful desert climate this holiday season."
North Texas head coach Grant McCasland enters his sixth season leading the Mean Green. He served as an assistant coach on Baylor head coach Scott Drew's from 2011 to 2016. Fromer Lopes director of recruiting Achoki Moikobu is entering his first season on the staff.
"We are thrilled to be playing in the Basketball Hall of Fame's Jerry Colangelo Classic in December," McCasland said. "It's a tremendous showcase for college basketball. We are honored to be a part of it and share the court with these exceptional programs."
