Grand Canyon junior right fielder
Tayler Aguilar was named WAC Hitter of the Week for the second time this season on Monday.
Aguilar put his name in the program's record books by adding three home runs to his season tally, which now stands at 20. It's the most ever hit by a GCU batter in the program's 17 seasons at the Division I level and is tied for the conference lead.
"Congrats to him, man," Stankiewicz said after Saturday's regular-season finale. "Twenty home runs in a college season, that's a great accomplishment. I'm proud of his development as a hitter."
Aguilar homered twice on Friday and once on Saturday to help lead the 25th-ranked Lopes to their second consecutive WAC series sweep.
As of April 22, the Evans, Colorado, native sat at nine home runs for the year. That began a tear against Stanford, New Mexico and Utah Valley for a four-game stretch that featured six home runs. He added two more at Arizona on May 3 and three more over the weekend to reach the 20-homer mark, most by a GCU batter at any level since 1985.
GCU's all-time program record is 27, which was set by Dave Morris and Rick Stromer, both in 1981.
"He's grown up," Stankiewicz said. "He's shown a lot more leadership skills as well. He's staying within himself. It's just fun to see him develop as a player and a person. That young man has worked hard and this means a lot to him. It's cool as a coach when you see someone that puts that type of work in to have that type of accomplishment."
Half of Aguilar's six hits on the week were home runs. He also added six RBIs and five runs scored to take home the WAC honor.
