The Grand Canyon softball team defeated Long Island in a 9-0, run-rule victory on Thursday night after beating Minnesota earlier at GCU Softball Stadium.
The Lopes started off where they left off against the Gophers, adding three more home runs to bring the day's total to eight as junior right fielder
Kristin Fifield hit two and first baseman
Denae Chatman added her third round-tripper of the day.
Â
"It was fun to watch us swing the bat today altogether," Lopes head coach
Shanon Hays said. "Jacie (Hambrick) threw very well tonight against a good-hitting team. Denae was a bigtime force and it was contagious. We need to play a little cleaner in the infield, but I am happy with the wins."
Â
Hambrick allowed one hit in the opening inning and then retired the following three batters to put the Lopes up to bat in a 0-0 game. GCU took advantagem, starting with a leadoff single from left fielder
Gianna Nicoletti and a double by center fielder
Stephanie Reed. With runners on second and third, sophomore shortstop
Katelyn Dunckel singled to left to score Nicoletti. Fifield hit her first home run of the day over the left center field fence, giving GCU a 4-0 lead.Â
Â
After a scoreless second inning, the Lopes went back to work. Dunckel led off with a single up the middle and stole second. Chatman hit a towering home run over the left-field fence, putting the Lopes up 6-0.Â
Â
Three consecutive perfect innings for Hambrick brought the Lopes back up in the bottom of the fifth inning with a chance to end the game early.
This time, it was Reed who singled through the left to begin the rally and she stole second and third. Chatman drew a walk, setting up first and third with one out for Fifield. On the first pitch of her at bat, Fifield sent a shot that left the stadium for her second home run and the 9-0 run-rule win.

The Lopes are back in action at 5 p.m. Friday against Santa Clara in their first game of the GCU Purple Classic. Â
