New conference formula factors GCU's 7-2 start for tournament seeding
Grand Canyon men's basketball ranks third in the debut of the WAC Resume Seeding System, a new algorithm that will determine WAC Tournament seeding.
The WAC Resume Seeding System, the first of its type in college basketball, weighs nonconference performance and strength of schedule in addition to WAC play. With GCU's 7-2 start, the Lopes landed third on Monday's first public posting of the system that will seed the WAC Tournament in March.
The Lopes are one of five teams in the 13-team conference with a positive ranking at 1.26 WAC points, trailing only Sam Houston (7-1) with 2.15 WAC points and Seattle U (6-1) with 1.53 WAC points.
The new formula was created for WAC basketball by Ken Pomeroy of kenpom.com to reward season-long performance and incentivize challenging nonconference scheduling.

"The beauty of what we have created is we haven't completely reinvented the wheel," WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton said in July. "We just smoothed out some of the edges with sandpaper. The way that we have done it is: our conference tournament is still a traditional conference tournament where it is winner take all or winner take the AQ (automatic qualification). All we have done is create a system where we are seed based on your entire body of work instead of just 18 games."
The Lopes have four remaining nonconference games, including a Wednesday home game against Loyola Marymount (7-3) and Saturday's Jerry Colangelo Classic game against North Texas (6-2) at Footprint Center in Phoenix. Before WAC play begins Dec. 29, GCU also plays home games against Pepperdine (5-2) on Dec. 17 and Idaho State (2-8) on Dec. 20.
