Grand Canyon men's basketball announced that freshmen
Derrick Michael Xzavierro and
Isaiah Carr will redshirt the 2022-23 season to continue their development.
The Lopes officially open their season on Monday night against Montana State.
Xzavierro, a 6-foot-10 forward from NBA Global Academy, hails from Jakarta, Indonesia, and is the country's first Division I basketball scholarship player.
"Derrick is going to be a fantastic player at GCU," Drew said. "He was not able to be in the states this summer, and now this will give him more time to adjust to a different culture and playing style. The future for Derrick is extremely bright."
Carr, a 7-foot forward/center from Las Cruces, New Mexico, was rated as the top player in his state's high school senior class.
"Isaiah is very young for his class, being only 18 years old," GCU head coach
Bryce Drew said. "This year will allow his body to develop and adjust to college life. He has great hands and touch around the rim and will be a very good player we can rely on."
With a redshirt season, Xzavierro and Carr will not suit up for the Lopes this season but will retain all four years of eligibility, starting with the 2023-24 season.
