EDINBURG, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team began a two-game road trip with a 0-0 draw at UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday night.
GCU (4-5-2, 0-3-1 WAC) outshot UTRGV (2-8-2, 0-3-2 WAC) by a whopping 30-2 margin, firing the most shots in a game since Aug. 22, 2021. The Lopes also took a season-high 13 corner kicks but were unable to find the winning goal. Despite the draw, the Lopes earn their first WAC standings point of the season.
The first of many chances for GCU came in the 18th minute when freshman midfielder
AJ Loera hit the crossbar on a shot from outside the penalty box. The Lopes maintained possession for most of the match and were able to generate good looks from set pieces.
In the final nine minutes of the match, GCU took a pair of corner kicks and had two shots on goal, but UTRGV goalkeeper Emma Loov stopped them, finishing with a career-high nine saves.

Ani Jensen had productive minutes off the bench for the second straight game, taking three shots with all going on goal.

Shantel Hutton faced two UTRGV shots in the 30th and 38th minutes, the only shots of the day for the Vaqueros. Sophomore goalie
Jordan Ferguson took over in the second half and helped preserve the shutout.
The Lopes will wrap up the road trip at Stephen F. Austin for an early Sunday match, beginning at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
