ESPN returns to GCU Arena on Feb. 17

After Lopes' network-hosting debut last year, ESPNU to air their game vs. Abilene Christian
GCU Arena hosted an ESPN game broadcast for the first time last season, and the national network opted for a return to Phoenix this season to feature Grand Canyon's Friday night matchup against Abilene Christian on Feb. 17.
The game will tip at 9 p.m. (Phoenix time) on ESPNU.
"We are thrilled that ESPN selected to return to GCU Arena and showcase one of college basketball's best environments," Lopes head coach Bryce Drew said. "Being on the national stage is another great opportunity for people to see the best student section in the country and the great university it represents."
GCU hosted Tarleton last January for ESPN's first visit for a Lopes' game. The Lopes, who also appeared on ESPNU in three WAC Tournament championship appearances, posted a commanding 80-59 win in front of a neon-clad crowd of 7,499 fans.
"This one was different," GCU forward Gabe McGlothan said following the game. "The Havocs always show out, but, man, everyone was full force. We had everyone standing, even in the upper deck. It's just a blessing. It can't get much better than this. If it can, that's going to be hard because the Havocs continue to raise the roof."
ESPN's crew of Roxy Bernstein and Adrian Branch characterized the scene as "one of the best home courts in college basketball on display here tonight." Branch listed GCU as the best student section in college basketball on a list with Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Arizona and BYU.
The WAC is in its second year of an expanded ESPN agreement that includes a minimum of one televised regular-season game per season. ESPN opted to televise a second WAC game this season — California Baptist at Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 26. The WAC was ranked as the 15th toughest conference out of 32 in Division I men's basketball last season, per KenPom.com.
Fans who have ESPNU as a part of their cable or streaming subscription can also watch the game on the ESPN app.
The theme for the game will be a Purple Out. The game will not air on FOX 10 Xtra, GCU's usual station for home telecasts, but will still feature radio coverage on 1580 The Fanatic (99.3/95.9 FM).
