The Grand Canyon women's soccer team defeated UNLV 2-1 when Lopes fifth-year forward
Camryn Larson scored in double overtime Sunday at GCU Stadium to improve the Lopes record to 5-1.
"I'm so proud of the girls and the effort we put in," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell said. "When you look at the stats, stats are stats. But, oh my gosh, we had so many chances, so many opportunities to put that game away."
The Lopes outshot the Rebels 23-6, with 10 shots on goal. Of the eight shots in the first half, sophomore midfielder
Brenna Alderson was able to put the Lopes on the board with a header at the near post off senior midfielder
Marleen Schimmer's corner kick.
With less than 10 minutes of regulation remaining, UNLV evened the match when Marcella Brooks converted a free kick just outside the penalty box, scoring on the only shot on goal that the Rebels had.
"Soccer can be crazy; soccer can be cool," Cissell said. "But I'm really really proud of the way that the girls continued to fight, continued to battle. It was extremely hot today and we just kept pushing. We just kept doing everything we could and going forward and then finally got that game-winning goal."
After a total of 104 minutes and 18 seconds of play, Larson scored the golden goal to secure the win.
The winning play started with a free kick by Schimmer to the mix of Lopes and Rebels at the top of the penalty box, which was then deflected out to senior midfielder
Noah Johnson. Johnson kicked the ball past the Rebels defenders and toward the goal, setting up Larson for a one-on-one chance against the charging UNLV goalkeeper. She slid into the kick to score in the right side of the net.
"What a great feeling for all of us when that ball hit the back of the net," Cissell said. "What a great win for us to move our record to 5-1 on an extremely emotional day for me personally."
Two years ago to the day, Cissell lost his father and leaned on him and God to get through the win.
"I've been an emotional wreck all day to be honest," Cissell said. "Even right before we started the second overtime, I said a little prayer to my dad up in heaven and said, 'Dad, I'm going for it. We're in overtime and I'm playing a 3-3-4 and I need your help right now.' Thank you God. Thank you Dad. Like I said, a really emotional day, and I couldn't be more proud of our soccer family right now."
Up next, the Lopes host the GCU Tournament from Thursday to Saturday, when the Lopes welcome New Mexico, Northern Arizona and Denver.
