OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team opened its WAC campaign with a 0-0 draw at Utah Valley on Thursday.
The defense for GCU (7-2-1) was stout against the reigning WAC regular-season and tournament champs, limiting the Wolverines (5-4-1) to just two shots on goal in 110 minutes of play.
"It was a very competitive and intense match between two really good teams," Lopes head coach
Chris Cissell said. "I do not like ties and we never play for a draw, so I was very proud of the team that we kept pressing hard and looking for the match winner. We had some great chances late in the match and through both overtimes."
GCU sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Ferguson recorded her fifth shutout of the season in the draw. That ties Ferguson for the program record in a Division I season and lowered her conference-leading goals against average to 0.72.
Defenders
Tyler Ferguson, Jordan's sister, and
Hannah Edwards anchored the back line by playing all 110 minutes against a Utah Valley front three that had combined to score 12 of the team's 17 goals this season.
The Lopes were aggressive on the offensive end early with senior forward
Marleen Schimmer taking two shots in the first seven minutes. The Lopes took two more shots near the half-hour mark but were focused on the defensive side for much of the half.
In the second half, GCU came out aggressive on offense and forced Utah Valley goalkeeper Brooklyn Nielsen to make two saves in the first 10 minutes. The Wolverines also ramped up their offense, drawing six corner kicks in the half. The Lopes defended them well by not allowing a shot off any of the set pieces.
GCU had chances to steal a win in overtime with Schimmer drawing a save out of Nielsen in the 96th minute. Sophomore midfielder
Brenna Alderson's left-footed shot with less than three minutes to go was barely saved.
"Utah Valley is a very good, well-coached team and we came here and tried our best to get the win," Cissell said. "But coming away with a tie on the road is not a horrible result for us. We will learn from this result and keep working hard."
Schimmer paced the GCU offense with six shots, including three on goal. Defenders
Raquel Hagar, a junior, and
Destinee Duran, a freshman, played meaningful minutes off the bench, logging 83 and 74 minutes, respectfully.
The Lopes will look for their first WAC win of the season at Dixie State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in St. George, Utah.
