SAN ANTONIO — The Grand Canyon women's soccer team lost for the first time this season on Sunday in a 2-1 defeat at UTSA.
The GCU defense allowed the first two goals of the season in the second half, one off a penalty kick and one off a shot from the right side of the box. Senior forward
Marleen Schimmer attempted to lead a Lopes comeback with a long-distance goal in the 86th minute but GCU ran out of time despite outshooting UTSA 17-9.
"Disappointing result, but those were the first goals we've allowed this season and the first one was a penalty kick," Lopes head coach
Chris Cissell said. "We lost to a good team on the road, but we created numerous scoring opportunities and put ourselves in positions to compete all the way to the final whistle. We will learn from this, and we will get back to work next week and I am really excited about and proud of our team."
The Lopes (3-1) and Roadrunners (3-1) were locked in a scoreless first half as GCU led in shots 6-3. UTSA countered with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and nearly scored the first goal in the eighth minute but a full-extension fingertip save by GCU goalie
Jordan Ferguson kept the game scoreless.
In the second half, UTSA broke the tie on a penalty kick from Isa Hernandez in the 60th minute after a GCU defender was called for a handball in the penalty box. It was the first goal the Lopes had allowed this season in just over 335 minutes of game time.
The Roadrunners doubled their lead two minutes later, as passing and ball possession in GCU's defensive half led to a goal by Sarina Russ.
Down 2-0, GCU continued to attack offensively. Schimmer hit the left post off a free kick and the subsequent rebound shot by Larson was blocked in the 69th minute. Schimmer broke through with four minutes left on a high-arching 35-yard strike that put GCU on the board. UTSA maintained possession for the final four minutes as the Lopes ran out of time for an equalizer.
GCU will regroup for an in-state matchup against Northern Arizona in Flagstaff on Friday before hosting UNLV at GCU Stadium next Sunday at 1 p.m.
