STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Grand Canyon softball team split a Saturday doubleheader in its first-ever meeting with Tarleton, bouncing back from a Game 1 loss to win 8-0 in the second game.
After Friday's doubleheader was postponed because of rain, the Lopes struck first in Game 1 on Saturday when junior left fielder
Gianna Nicoletti walked, stole second and took third base on a sacrifice bunt by senior right fielder
Tabitha Dyer. With two outs and Nicoletti on third, junior second baseman
Savannah Tourville singled to left for a 1-0 lead.
The Texans took the lead with a two-run second inning and added four runs in the fourth inning and five in the sixth to earn an 11-1 win.
Lopes rebound for Game 2 win
After two scoreless innings in Game 2, the Lopes scored first again. This time, it was Lopes sophomore third baseman
Araceli Pesqueira who started the inning off with a single to left field. With one out and Pesqueira on second, sophomore designated player
Jaiden Reid singled to center field to give GCU runners on first and third. Senior first baseman
Lilly Bishop hit a ground ball back to the pitcher, scoring Pesqueira for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, GCU sophomore center fielder
Kristin Fifield laced a triple down the left-field line and scored on a Dyer single for a 2-0 edge.
The Lopes added six runs in the fifth inning. With one out and a runner on first, junior first baseman
Taylor Olsen singled to center field. Tourville followed with a single through the left side to load the bases.
Fifield's single to center brought home Reid and Olsen, putting GCU ahead 4-0. The Lopes were not done yet, though, as freshman shortstop
Anjolee Aguilar-Beaucage executed a squeeze bunt perfectly to score Tourville. With runners on second and third, Dyer singled to shortstop to plate one more run. GCU scored its last two runs off a single to center by senior catcher
Kaileigh Holland, giving the Lopes an 8-0 lead.

Jacie Hambrick came in and closed the door on the Texans as she retired the side.
The Lopes are back in action next weekend as they host Seattle U for their final WAC series of the season at GCU Softball Stadium.
