The Grand Canyon softball team returned home after being away for their past four games and stayed atop the WAC by splitting a doubleheader with new WAC opponent Dixie State.
The Trailblazers came out swinging in the first game for an 11-0 win, but the Lopes (16-20, 5-3 WAC) bounced back and took the second game 4-3 at GCU Softball Stadium.
"It was a disappointing start to the day," Lopes head coach
Ann Pierson said. "We gave them big innings and our bats never really found a rhythm. It is hard to win ball games like that."Â Â
Game 1 was all Dixie State, as they scored their first run in the first inning. GCU threatened in the bottom half, but was not able to score and the Trailblazers pilled on with three runs in the third, two in the fourth and five in the sixth.
 Â
GCU showed some fight in the bottom of the sixth when freshman shortstop
Anjolee Aguilar-Beaucage doubled to right field, she was stranded.
 Â
Dixie State again got on the board first inning in Game 2, as they scored three runs in the second inning. Â
In the fourth inning, the Lopes bats exploded. GCU senior first baseman
Lilly Bishop hit a one-out, solo home run to get GCU on the board.
Savannah Tourville, the Lopes third baseman, followed with a double to left center and scored on senior catcher
Kaylee Dietrich's double to left field. With a runner on third and two outs, junior left fielder
Gianna Nicoletti laid down a bunt single and advanced to second. Right fielder
Tabitha Dyer singled through the right-side, scoring Dietrich and Nicoletti for a 4-3 lead.
Freshman right-handed pitcher
Jacie Hambrick kept the Trailblazers off the board in the fifth and six innings. In the top of the seventh with one out and one runner on base, senior right-handed pitcherÂ
Lexy Coons came in and closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts.
"It was good to see the fight in Game 2 and
Jacie Hambrick threw well," Pierson said. "It was good to see some offense coming through and we need to start that way tomorrow as well."Â Â Â
Â
GCU and Dixie State are back in action at the GCU Softball Stadium for a 1 p.m. Saturday rubber match.
