TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon softball team dropped a Wednesday doubleheader at No. 8 Arizona.
GCU started Game 1 threatening when senior right fielder
Tabitha Dyer drew a one-out walk and senior first baseman
Lilly Bishop followed with a single through the right side. With runners on first and second, Lopes sophomore center fielder
Kristin Fifield loaded the bases with a single to left field, but Arizona (26-5) managed to stop the rally without allowing a run.
GCU freshman right-handed pitcher
Jacie Hambrick faced four batters in the bottom of the first inning, only giving up one hit and recording a strikeout. After a quick second inning for the GCU batters, the Wildcats took a five-run lead off four hits in the bottom of the second inning.
The Wildcats added a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings, allowing them to win 8-0 on a five-inning run rule.
In Game 2, Dyer recorded the first hit with an infield single to shortstop. GCU had runners in scoring position with one out but the Wildcats were able to shut them down.
Arizona got on the board in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on two hits. In the top of the second, Lopes junior third baseman
Savannah Tourville led off the inning with a single to left field. Senior designated player
Kaileigh Holland followed with a single through the left side. The Lopes threatened with runners on second and third and one out but were not able to get on the board.
GCU senior right-handed pitcher
Ryan Denhart managed a four-batter inning in the bottom of the second despite giving up one run. In the bottom of the third, the Wildcats added two more runs on three hits for a 7-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, senior right hander
Lexy Coons came into the game and produced the Lopes first one-two-three inning.
The Wildcats tacked on one more run in the fifth to win 8-0 again on the run rule.
The Lopes (16-23, 5-4 WAC) are back in action on April 23-24 in Riverside, California, where they will take on California Baptist (16-23-1, 4-5 WAC).
