All-WAC puts Scott on 1st team, honors 4 Lopes

Brown, Piera, Caldwell also pick up conference accolades for GCU's 16-6 regular season
The Grand Canyon women's basketball team put on such an impressive team performance this season that the postseason individual conference honors were spread to four players, highlighted by Katie Scott being selected to the All-WAC first team along with being awarded WAC Freshman of the Year and WAC Newcomer of the Year.
Scott was joined in the WAC accolades by fellow freshman Tiarra Brown being voted to the All-WAC second team and the All-Newcomer Team. Sophomore guard Taylor Caldwell was picked by conference coaches for the All-Defensive Team while her backcourt mate, junior guard Laura Piera, received an All-WAC honorable mention.
Scott and Brown were named two of the WAC's top 10 players after leading a 16-6 Lopes team in scoring and rebounding. Scott, from Carl Junction, Missouri, averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game with 55.6% shooting from the field, a 48.9% clip on 3-pointers and 76.5% accuracy at the free throw line.
Brown, from Tacoma, Washington, averaged 10.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 0.7 blocked shots in 24.7 minutes per game despite getting a late start to her season because of injury.
In overall play, Scott was the WAC's leading scorer and 3-point shooters at 16.5 points per game with 48.9% shooting on 3s.
Scott and Brown also were named to the WAC All-Newcomer Team and are the only freshmen to make the All-WAC first or second team.
The selections are based on conference play, where Scott ranked fifth for points per game (14.3), fifth for field goal percentage (51.8%), fourth for 3-point shooting (44.8%) and 18th for rebounds per game (4.9). Brown was 13th in points per game (12.6) and rebounds per game (5.6) while ranking sixth for field goal percentage (45.6%).
Piera, from Barcelona, Spain, was an All-WAC honorable mention after logging the eighth-most minutes per game (32.6) in conference play, where she ranked second for steals per game (2.7), fourth for assists per game (3.6) and 17th for points per game (10.8).
WAC coaches considered Caldwell, from Bakersfield, California, to be one of the conference's five best defenders. She made the All-Defensive Team after averaging 2.6 steals per game for the season.
The Lopes will open play in the WAC Tournament on Wednesday as the No. 3 seed against No. 6 seed UT Rio Grande Valley, which GCU beat twice during the season. The game will tip off at 9 p.m. (Phoenix time) with the winner advancing to the Friday semifinals against the Wednesday winner of No. 2 seed Utah Valley vs. No. 7 seed Chicago State.
