INDIANAPOLIS — There is history within the history for Grand Canyon's first NCAA tournament appearance Saturday.
When 15th-seeded GCU takes on second-seeded Iowa at 3:25 p.m. (Phoenix time) on TBS, Lopes center
Asbjørn Midtgaard could become the second college basketball player since 1992-93 to average a double-double while shooting 70% from the field for a season.
Sports-reference.com, with a database going back to 1992-93, shows that Utah Jazz rookie center Udoka Azubuike was the only qualifying player to previously pull off the feat when he averaged 13.7 points, 10.5 rebounds with 74.8% shooting for Kansas last season.
Midtgaard enters Saturday's game as the national field goal percentage leader at 70.6% and is averaging 14.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Midtgaard needs 13 rebounds against Iowa and Luke Garza to bring his average to exactly 10.0 for the season. To be the only player who averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds with 70% shooting since 1992-93, Midtgaard needs 14 points against the Hawkeyes to be at precisely 14.0 per game for the season.
