The Grand Canyon women's soccer team wrapped up the first week of the regular season with a 2-0 loss to Northern Arizona on Sunday at GCU Stadium.
The Lopes outshot NAU 12-10, including a 6-3 advantage for shots on goal, but were unable to get a shot to cross the goal line.
"I was disappointed in the loss today," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell. "We will get better. We will learn from this, but today was just not good enough for the expectations for our team. I thought we created some good chances in the flow of the game, but we need to get better at converting those chances. We are looking forward to the upcoming week of training to prepare and regroup for our games against Arizona State."
GCU (0-2) started off on the wrong foot, conceding an early goal in just the third minute. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Hayden Wallace cleared the ball for the Lopes but it went straight to Paige Maling of NAU. Maling quickly found her teammate Abby Donathan, who caught Wallace out of her goal and gave NAU (1-0) the early lead on a right-footed shot into the top corner.
The Lopes were unable to generate their first real chance on goal until the 19th minute, when sophomore forward
Jaycee Iranshad found another sophomore forward,
Dani Babb, in space down the right side of the field. Babb took a close shot on the right side of the goal but it was saved by NAU's Taryn Benham, who finished with six saves.
The Lumberjacks extended their lead in the 11th minute on a goal from 20 yards out by Kayla Terhune. Wallace was able to get a hand on it but the ball still found the back of the net. Maling picked up her second assist of the game.
In the second half, the Lopes put more pressure on the Lumberjack defense with eight shots. Off a corner kick in the 78th minute by junior forward
Marleen Schimmer, senior forward
Camryn Larson nearly converted a header to the left side of the goal but the shot was saved by Benham.
After using just three players from the bench in the season opener, the Lopes doubled that number against NAU with sophomore forward
Raeanne Jones, freshman midfielder
Reese Mendenhall, junior defender
Anna Whitaker and sophomore forward
Sydney Torres all making their season debuts.
The Lopes will be back in action Thursday when they host Arizona State at GCU Stadium on at 7 p.m.
