The Grand Canyon women's soccer team dropped its WAC opener to Utah Valley on Thursday night at GCU Stadium.
The Lopes (0-4-0) defended well for nearly 70 minutes until the Wolverines (2-1-1) scored on a cross to the back post, leading to a game-winning goal. For the eighth time in the teams' past nine meetings, the game ended in that one-goal margin.
Through the first 45 minutes, GCU and Utah Valley were deadlocked with the Wolverines holding a 10-4 advantage in shots. GCU goalkeeper
Hayden Wallace regrouped well after the Lopes' 4-0 loss to Arizona State on Sunday to make five saves in Thursday night's first half. GCU also contained Preseason WAC Offensive Player of the Year Amber Tripp, limiting her to just one shot in the game.
Offensively, the Lopes didn't get going until the second half when they took nine shots and forced UVU goalkeeper Isabel Jones-Dawe to make a pair of saves. Junior midfielder
Marleen Schimmer provided the Lopes with their best scoring opportunity in the 60th minute, taking a shot across the goal that deflected off the left post.
GCU's
Camryn Larson and
Jaycee Iranshad also had chances in the 81st minute off a corner. After Larson's header was blocked, Iranshad, who led the team with five shots and three on goal, ripped a right-footed shot from outside the penalty box but into the hands of Jones-Dawe.
Utah Valley took the lead on a goal by Julianna Carter when a cross by fellow substitute Cassidy McCormick found her alone on the back side of the goal. The junior forward was able to redirect the ball with her left foot for her first goal of the season and ninth in her career.
The Lopes will look to even the series at 1 p.m. Saturday at GCU Stadium.
