GCU junior led conference with .500 batting average on opening weekend
Grand Canyon junior outfielder Gianna Nicoletti earned the first WAC Hitter of the Week award for her performance over four days of play..
The Lopes hosted six games Thursday through Sunday and the Fullerton, California, native led the WAC with a .500 batting average in the season-opening week. She picked up hits in five of six games, including a 3-for-4 game in the season opener against Utah on Thursday night. Over the six games, she was 9 for 18 from the plate, driving in four RBIs and scoring six runs. She also earned five walks and struck out just once to post a .625 on-base percentage.
"We are so happy for Gianna for her well deserved honor," Lopes head coach Ann Pierson said. "She was an offensive force fro us last weekend and it showed all of her true abilities. She set the tone on opening day and never looked back.Proud to see her hard work paying off."
Nicoletti and the Lopes are back in action on Feb. 20, when they play at San Diego.
