It has been just over 24 years since the Grand Canyon women's soccer team faced off against Arizona State, and Thursday night's match did not disappoint in the long-awaited game between the crosstown programs.
GCU and ASU were locked in a tightly contested game until the Sun Devils prevailed 3-2 in overtime on a 96th-minute goal at GCU Stadium.
Â
"I'm just super proud of the effort, intensity and the warrior-like mentality the team played with," Lopes head coach
Chris Cissell said. "You're never happy after a loss, but I do feel like everyone on our team showed the heart, passion and competitive spirit that we're wanting them to play with every match."
Â
The GCU defense and redshirt goalkeeper
Hayden Wallace had to withstand constant attacking play from Arizona State (3-0) from the opening whistle all the way to the 96th minute. The Sun Devils took 29 shots, the most shots GCU (0-3) has faced since California Baptist took 35 shots in the 2019 season. ASU also took 17 corner kicks, which was the most in a game of the GCU Division I era. Wallace finished with 13 saves, the third-most saves in a game in GCU's D-I history.
Â
When the Lopes had the ball on the attacking end of the field, they made the most of it. After GCU surrendered an early goal in the fourth minute, the offense turned the game around with two goals in just over four minutes to take the lead.
In the 27th minute, Lopes sophomore forward
Lindsey Prokop weaved between defenders on the left side of the penalty box before crossing the ball to senior forward
Camryn Larson, whose header into the top left corner tied the game at 1-1.
Â
GCU took a 2-1 lead just a few minutes later in the 31st minute. Lopes sophomore forward
Dani Babb took the ball on the right side and crossed it into the middle for Larson. After a collision between Larson and the ASU goalkeeper, the ball fell to GCU freshman midfielder
Brenna Alderson, who tapped it forward to sophomore forward
Jaycee Iranshad to set up her second goal of the young season.
Â
The Lopes went more defensive in the second half, taking only one shot while trying to keep ASU off the board. The Sun Devil offense remained aggressive with 11 shots and nine corners in the period. ASU finally broke through with the equalizer in the 76th minute, when Vildan Kardesler scored into the right side of the net.
Â
In overtime, ASU found the game winner when a missed shot bounced off the right post and to midfielder Olivia Nguyen, who was in the right place at the right time and tapped it in for the win.
Â
Despite the loss, Cissell and the Lopes will take the positives from the game and regroup for a rematch at ASU's Sun Devil Stadium on Sunday night.
"If we play the rest of the season with the same intensity that we competed with tonight, we're going to be a very tough team to beat," Cissell said.
