ABILENE, Texas – The top-seeded Grand Canyon women's soccer team prevailed in the WAC Tournament semifinals with a gritty 2-1 win over Lamar on Friday evening, sending the Lopes to a Sunday championship game against Utah Valley.
Tied 1-1 at Abilene Christian's Elmer Gray Stadium, the Lopes (15-3-2) scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute on a strike by junior forward
Lindsey Prokop and advanced to the WAC Tournament championship match for the first time in program history.
"We didn't play our best game, but we will take the win against a very organized and great defensive team in Lamar," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell said. "Give (Lamar head coach) Steve (Holeman) and his staff a lot of credit, defensively.
"But I think our character, grit and determination really came out and a lot of girls stepped up in the second half. That's been the key to our success is someone new every game steps up. We may not know who it's going to be, but we are confident in our team, and at the end of the day we were going to figure out a way to get it done."
It was a tale of two halves for the Lopes, as they shut down Lamar (9-8-2) in the first 45 minutes, outshooting them 16-0. The Lopes applied even more pressure by by taking an early 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, when WAC Offensive Player of the Year
Marleen Schimmer scored on a free kick.
From 20 yards out, Schimmer bent a right-footed shot past the Lamar wall and into the top left corner for her conference-leading 13th goal of the season.
Up by a goal in the second half, the Lopes didn't allow the Cardinals to take their first shot until the 52nd minute, but that shot resulted in a Lamar goal for a 1-1 tie.
The final 30 minutes became a whole new game, as the Lopes started to push offensively in pursuite of a game-winning goal. It finally came in the 79th minute, when
Haley Bostard and
Camryn Larson, a pair of fifth-year players, linked up in the box to find Prokop open for a point-blank shot across the goal and to the back of the net.
The junior forward from Omaha, Nebraska, had missed the past three games but made up for lost time with her seventh goal and fourth game-winning goal this season.
"I couldn't have done this without my team," Prokop said. "It was definitely a battle out there and I'm so proud of everyone that stepped out on that field today. even our bench was always on top of it. I'm so proud of everyone."
After the Lopes took the 2-1 edge, they had to withstand a barrage from Lamar that included three corner kicks and two shots in the game's final minute. Lopes sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Ferguson made the game's final save with 14 seconds left to seal the win for GCU.
With the win, the Lopes are in the championship match of the WAC Tournament for the first time in school history. A win in Sunday's noon game (Phoenix time) would punch the team's ticket to the NCAA tournament for the first time. The Lopes will face West No. 2 seed Utah Valley, which upset the Southwest No. 1 seed Stephen F. Austin 1-0 on Friday night in Abilene.
GCU and Utah Valley met last week at GCU Stadium, where the Lopes won 6-2 to clinch the WAC West Division title.
