The Grand Canyon baseball program announced a 2021 recruiting class whose signees who will join the program next year for the 2023 season.
Of the class' 11 players, seven are from Arizona. GCU also signed individuals from California, Utah and Kansas.
"We are very excited to announce our 2021 recruiting class," Lopes head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "We were looking for a balanced recruiting class in terms of freshmen and junior college additions. Assistant coaches
Gregg Wallis and
Jon Wente did just that with seven freshmen and four junior college students-athletes coming in. Each player has a physicality and athleticism that will give them the opportunity to get on the field right away or push others to be better. We believe the strength of our program comes from competition within the program."
The incoming Lopes include infielders
Nick Arias,
Emilio Barreras and
Preston Clifford; right-handed pitchers
Lucas Cardy,
Tyson Heaton,
Jace Smith and
Nathan Ward; left-handed pitchers
Grant Richardson and
Zach Thornton; catcher
Zach Yorke; and shortstop/right-handed pitcher
Isaac Lyon.
The class includes four position players, six pitchers and a two-way player.
"These new student-athletes will push our program to be more competitive on the mound, on the defensive end and at the plate," Stankiewicz said. "Each one of our new recruits were nationally recruited student-athletes and we are honored that they chose GCU as their destination. The future continues to be bright."
The class members will play their respective high school or junior college seasons this spring before enrolling at GCU in August with an opportunity to officially take the field in February 2023.
