RIVERSDIE, Calif. — The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team traveled for the last time in the regular season to take on California Baptist in a fight for the WAC West Division lead. The Lopes dropped three straight sets to the Lancers, who won 25-18, 25-18-25, 27-25 to put GCU at 7-4 in WAC play.
In the opening set, the Lopes were able to take the lead over the Lancers (10-9) after a five-point run highlighted by junior setter
Klaire Mitchell's two aces and junior
Annabelle Kubinski's kill. CBU, however, went on a three-point run a few points later to take the lead back and closed out a 25-18 first set.
It was a similar story in the second set, as the Lopes came from behind for an 8-4 lead after a five-point run started by kills from outside hitters
Ashley Lifgren and
McKenzie Wise, along with an ace from sophomore
Castan Sturm. The Lancers went on a four-point run later in the set to lead 19-15 and held the lead until they took a 2-0 match edge.
In the third set. the Lopes fought point for point with the Lancers and managed to tie the set at 22-22 after kills from junior middle blocker
Hannah Eskes and Wise. With CBU at match point, the Lopes forced extra points and tied the set at 24-24 and 25-25 all before losing 27-25.
Wise recorded a team-high 11 kills while Mitchell tallied 26 assists and three aces.
The Lopes are back in action on Thursday in GCU Arena to host Utah Valley at 6 p.m.
