The Grand Canyon women's basketball team fell 62-54 in its first-ever meeting with Idaho State on Friday at GCU Arena.
The game was knotted up at the end of the first quarter at 12-12 but a 17-0 Bengals run and 19% Lopes shooting set them behind 33-19 at the end of the half.Â
"Defensively, for three quarters, we did a really good job," GCU head coach Molly Miller said. "That second quarter really hurt us and we got in a hole that we had to dig our way out of."
The Lopes (9-3) entered the second half with more intensity and grit against Idaho State (13-1), which won its 12th consecutive game. GCU doubled its second-quarter scoring total in the third quarter and carried that momentum into the final stretch.
"We just need to be more consistent for four quarters, especially against really good teams," Miller said. "Idaho State, to their credit, is a really good team."
The Lopes forced 24 Bengals turnovers, keeping the streak alive of forcing at least 20 opponent turnovers in every game this season. GCU leads in the nation in opponent turnovers per game (26.7).
Idaho State led by 20 at the 3:12 mark of the third quarter and the Lopes fought back throughout the fourth quarter to bring them within two possessions of the Bengals.Â
"That's something that I'm proud of, that they didn't just fold," Miller said. "They really did fight all the way back into the game."
GCU freshman Tiarra Brown recorded her second double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
Joining Brown in double-digit scoring was sophomore guard Taylor Caldwell with 12. Caldwell led the steals for both sides with five.
"I think this was a good game going into the majority of our WAC play," Miller said. "This kind of got us ready for that next level of intensity and effort and execution that we need to see from here on out."
Up next, GCU will host Tarleton after rescheduling the series for the second time. The games are set for Monday and Tuesday at 6 p.m. at GCU Arena.
